The Heart of Religion Tourism in Greece : Monasteries of Meteora

Religion tourism has always been attractive for the faithful ones. The Muslims have Mecca, the Jews have Jeruasalem, the catholic people have Vatican, as well as the orthodox people have Mount Athos and Constantinopol. Religion tourism is a good opportunity, for those who believe in God, to travel to Greece, especially in the Meteora area, where fantastic monasteries can be seen.

What is it so special with this place? Well, Meteora –which can be translated like:”flying through the air”- is the only place in the world where monasteries had been built on the top of the cliffs.
Religion tourism is a very profitable business in these places. Even if the Meteora area –which is actually a part of the Hellenic culture- compiles just 6 monasteries, these lands are always full of tourists, tourists that are looking forward to coming closer to God from the height of the cliffs.

Varlaam monastery has been built 500 years ago by Nektarios Apsaradas and it is still standing. Opened in most of the time, the Varlaam Monastery had been given old icons and wooden crosses, as well as many relics and frescs.

The other most popular monastery in the Meteora region is Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas. With more than 400 years of history behind, the monastery has still the original wall icons and crosses, inside and can be visited 350 days per year.

And last, the third most popular monastery in the Meteora region, and also perfect for religion tourism is the Megalo Meteoro or Metamorphisis. This church has more than 700 years of history behind, and it is maybe the most known attraction point among the people who travel to Greece for religion tourism. Even if Megalo Meteoro or Metamorphisis is now more a museum than a church, it is still attracting hundreds of tourists every year, tourists that are willing to climb the tallest rocks in the region, in order to visit it.
